Richard Birnbaum

Richard Birnbaum has over 35 years of strategic and tactical experience in retail management, sales, operations, marketing, merchandising, and human resources. He served as Executive Vice President of Circuit City Stores and was a member of the leadership team that grew the company, from fewer than 50 stores with sales under $100 million, to over 600 stores with $10 billion in sales. Starting as a part-time sales associate in college, he held progressive positions of leadership including Store Manager, District Manager, Division President, and Senior VP of Marketing. Richard was also part of the CarMax start-up team. He retired from Circuit City in 2001 after 30 years with the company.

In 2002, Richard started the RSB Group, LLC, a consulting and project management company. As Chairman of Travis Boating Centers, a publicly held retail boat chain with over 40 locations, he orchestrated the sale of the company to Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Marine. He then served as President of Tracker Marine Retail and integrated the 77-store acquisition. Richard currently has direct oversight of several of V-Ten’s portfolio companies.  He also represents SGA, INC., a management strategy, sales training and development consulting company, and Jump Lab, an innovative marketing firm.

Richard graduated from American University in 1974 with BS degrees in Marketing and Human Resources. He has also completed the six-week Darden School Executive Program at the University of Virginia, as well as a wide variety of professional and retail related seminars. He remains active at American University and serves as Chairman of the Business School Advisory Council and is a Trustee of Jewish Family Services of Richmond. Richard lives in Richmond with his wife Shelley.
